One prevailing positive thing we’ve seen come from the COVID-19 pandemic is the many ways in which communities, organizations and neighbors are working together to support each other.

For the school districts of River Road, Bushland,        Amarillo, Canyon, and Highland Park, it is no different. The call to work together in service to our students, staff and communities is profound. We are answering that call by collectively working to be proactive and prevent the spread of the disease in our schools.

Our number one goal is keeping your child(ren) healthy and safe. Our number two goal is making sure we educate your child to his or her fullest potential.

After meeting with the Amarillo area superintendents and the Amarillo Health Authority this afternoon and evening, I have decided to partially suspend school for next week.

Students will need to stay home and staff members will need to report to their campuses and departments at the regularly scheduled time. Staff will be participating in planning sessions and professional development.

My goal is for students to return on Monday, March 30th. If school has to remain closed longer than that, then we will be prepared to meet the many different needs of ALL of our students through alternative means of instruction.

There will be more updates in the near future. Hopefully, this decision and letter will give families plenty of time to make alternate arrangements.

I am sure you will have many questions, especially of the campus principals or me. We may not have all the answers right now, but don’t hesitate to email your campus principal or my office at
