Superintendent's Message

A Message from the Superintendent of River Road ISD
 ,
Mr. Richard Kelley

Mr. Kelley - Superintendent of RRISD

September 1, 2017

Welcome back, students, staff, and parents. First and foremost, I would like to extend a big "Thank You" to River Road parents and community for embracing me as their new superintendent last year. We are learning a lot together, reigniting some past traditions, and growing in a great direction. I also want to thank Wildcat teachers and staff members. They are a phenomenal group of educators! River Road ISD is the best kept secret in Amarillo, and we are ready to make that secret known to all! As River Road moves forward, we are constantly looking back to see how we can better serve our students, community, and state. We are changing our focus from students being "College Ready" to being "Life Ready". River Road will have the Right Road for the Right Reason for our students. If some of our Wildcats want to journey down a "college prep" road, then we want to offer ways for our students to graduate with a dual-diploma from River Road and Amarillo College or West Texas A&M University. If life takes some of our Wildcats down a "military/voc-tech prep" road, then we are going to push them in all subject areas so those students will be prepared for the varied demands of military service or voc-tech school training. Starting this year, our newest road for some of our Wildcats to travel on will be the "career" road. For those students that just want to start working after high school, we want to make sure they have options other than minimum wage, unskilled employment. Students on the "career" road will be able to graduate with a certificate in Cosmetology, Welding, or Certified Nursing Assistant. By continuing to bridge the needs between the River Road and Amarillo communities, River Road ISD will put students on the Right Road for the Right Reason.

My wish for this year is that all parents and community members will become active in the lives of pre-k through 12th grade children. As long as our children are well educated and ready to meet the demands of a 21st century America, our community, state, and country will thrive. In order to do this, parents and community members need to make it a point to let their state and federal representatives in government know how important it is to prepare our children with the best possible resources available. I know everyone is busy, but I want to encourage all parents, community members, and civic leaders to get involved in public schools. We must all work together to help children become the very best versions of themselves they can be.

If you are looking for a cure to your stressed-out life, spend time reading to a group of elementary children, help tutor middle school children who are struggling, or be a mentor to a high school child needing leadership. I pray that every parent and child has a great new school year. The teachers are ready, so bring on the kids!
